Welcome to the Dragoon guide! This resource is designed to assist you in mastering the Dragoon job in Final Fantasy XIV, providing core strategies, essential tips, and a detailed breakdown of your rotation.
Note: This guide isn't focused on advanced dungeons, trials, or raids; those will be left to their own specific guides. Instead, this guide introduces some foundational strategies for your job in FFXIV.
The goal is to help you grasp the mindset behind your job and to offer some useful approaches as you level.
These video resources from experienced players and content creators will provide additional perspectives on the Dragoon playstyle.
Keeping your equipment up-to-date is crucial. Insufficient gear can hinder your damage output/healing/survivability. Aim to have gear that matches your current level or is only slightly lower.
While progressing through the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ), you will frequently acquire gear upgrades and coffers to keep your setup competitive.
For leveling outside the MSQ, gear can be obtained through vendors (using Gil), the Market Board, or by trading Tomestones and Poetics earned through roulettes and other activities.
Level 50: Augmented Ironworks Gear (IL 130) – Obtain from Auriana in Mor Dhona or Rowena's Representatives in the main cities.
Level 60: Augmented Shire Gear (IL 270) – Available from Hismena in Idyllshire.
Level 70: Augmented Scaevan Gear (IL 400) – Obtainable from Enna in Rhalgr's Reach.
Level 80: Augmented Cryptlurker Gear (IL 530) – Purchase from Aymark in Eulmore.
Level 90: Augmented Credendum Gear (IL 660) – Obtainable from Cihanti in Radz-at-Han.
Level 100: Neo Kingdom Gear (IL 700) – Available from Zircon in Solution Nine.
This sections is for helping you understand how to level an alt job. If you are still doing MSQ this section can also help you catch up another job todo the MSQ with.
Before getting started it is good to make sure you have EXP buffs on. Some come from gear while others come from food or FC or being Rested.

Make sure to always have a Food buff up whiel leveling. Food Buff gives 3% increase to EXP and is very easy to obtain. I recommend buying Boiled Eggs from a merchant to use for the EXP Since they are cheap.
If you are not a trial player, you have the option to join or create and FC (Free Company). Free Companies are FFXIV's version of Guilds. An FC has the ability to have different Active buffs. Having Either Heat of Battle II or Heat of Battle III active will increase your EXP gained by 10% or 15%
Make sure you are taking breaks! By taking breaks from the game and logging out in a safe zone with an Aetheryte or Inn you will get Rested EXP. You can store up to one and half levels worth of Rested EXP and you increase your EXP gained by 50% for all monster kills.
If you job starts at level 1 the best way to level up is to do Fates and your Hunt Log.
Once you reach level 15 you can start doing dungeons! Running the highest level dungeon available to you is the fastest way to level up.

The Dragoon is a powerful melee DPS job known as the "King of the Heavens" in Final Fantasy XIV. This job excels at delivering devastating attacks while maintaining mobility through jumps and powerful AoE attacks. Dragoons are a popular choice for both single-target and multi-target encounters, and they are a valuable asset to any team.
Jump Management: Make sure to use Jump efficiently. It’s a powerful offensive tool, and you can also use Elusive Jump to reposition yourself during combat.
Life Surge: Use Life Surge to maximize your damage output and negate a portion of incoming damage, but manage your charges wisely.
Dragon's Flight: Use Dragonfire Dive to gain Dragon's Flight, a powerful buff that significantly boosts your damage output.
Draconian Fire: The Draconian Fire buff allows you to use powerful attacks. Maintain uptime on this buff by using the correct combos and weaving in abilities such as Draconian Fury and Raiden Thrust.
Managing Nastrond: Make sure to use Nastrond to capitalize on the Nastrond Ready stacks granted by Geirskogul.
The Firstminds' Focus: This is your secondary resource, and it can be spent on Wyrmwind Thrust. Managing this resource effectively will boost your overall damage output.
The Dragoon’s rotation is focused on utilizing specific skills efficiently to maximize damage output and support allies. The focus is on single-target and multi-target abilities, with a special emphasis on Jump and Dragon's Flight management.
Begin your rotation with True Thrust → Vorpal Thrust
.
Use Full Thrust as it becomes available.
Use Disembowel followed by Chaos Thrust
to generate a DoT, maintaining uptime.
Use Fang and Claw and then Wheeling Thrust
to trigger Draconian Fire.
While Draconian Fire is active, use Raiden Thrust as your main combo attack, followed by Draconian Fury
.
When you have enough Firstminds’ Focus to use Wyrmwind Thrust you will want to weave it in with the Heaven’s Thrust combo.
For 3+ targets, use Sonic Thrust followed by Coerthan Torment
to deal significant damage to multiple targets.
Use Jump to reposition yourself and gain Dive Ready when you need to.
Use Wyrmwind Thrust to spend Firstminds’ Focus when you have enough to use it.
Use Geirskogul on cooldown.
When you have enough stacks of Nastrond Ready, use Nastrond for increased damage.
Use Dragonfire Dive to gain Dragon's Flight, which will increase your overall damage output.
Use Rise of the Dragon while Dragon's Flight is active to deliver a powerful AoE attack to enemies.
Use Stardiver while Life of the Dragon is active to deliver a powerful AoE attack to enemies.
Use Starcross to deliver a powerful single-target attack and gain a buff.
Use Jump to reposition yourself or gain Dive Ready.
Use Elusive Jump to reposition yourself quickly when needed.
Use Life Surge to increase your damage output and absorb a portion of incoming damage. Be sure to conserve your Life Surge charges as they are limited.
Use High Jump on cooldown for single-target damage.
Use Mirage Dive to evade attacks.
Maximize Dragon's Flight Uptime: Dragon's Flight significantly increases your damage output, so keep it active whenever possible. Use your Dragonfire Dive to refresh it on cooldown.
Manage Firstminds' Focus: Firstminds' Focus is your secondary resource. Use it effectively for Wyrmwind Thrust to maximize your damage output.
Position Yourself for Maximum Damage: The Dragoon's rear attacks deal increased damage. Use repositioning abilities like Jump or Elusive Jump to maximize your damage output.
Avoid Overcapping Blood: When you use an ability that generates Blood, you will want to make sure you're using Bloodspiller frequently enough to avoid overcapping. This is crucial for maximizing damage output.
Use Your Cooldowns Strategically: The Dragoon has a variety of cooldowns that can be used strategically in combination with raid buffs for maximum impact. For example, using Dragonfire Dive, Stardiver, and Starcross during a raid buff phase.
